Disc 2: PAL Technology
Disc two of the Jumpstart training series is designed to provide front office staff with a “hands-on” interactive training experience. Disc two includes in depth information about progressive lens technology and the benefits of dispensing premium progressive lenses in an optical office. Disc two is also approved by the American Board of Opticianry for four hours of continuing education credits.
What is a PAL?
Section one will provide optical professionals with detailed information pertaining to PALs. Training content will include an explanation of PALs, the difference between a bifocal and trifocal, and the benefits a patient will receive from wearing PALs. This section will also review the importance of selecting lenses before looking for a frame.
Short Corridor vs. Standard PALs
Optical professionals must understand the pros and cons of each progressive lens technology and how they apply to a variety of spectacle prescriptions. Section two training content will include the difference between short corridor progressive technology and standard progressive lens technology. It will also include examples of when a short corridor lens may be beneficial as well as outlining the limitations.
Task PALs
Premium task PALs are many times under utilized in optical offices. In order to provide a patient with the best possible vision, each optical professional in the office must have a basic understanding of task. Section three training content will include a basic overview of the task/occupational PALs, the differences in technology, and patient benefits.
Features to look for in a Premium Progressive Lens
Upon understanding the technology of PALs, it is also necessary that all optical professionals have an understanding of what to look for in a premium PAL. Section four training content in this section will include detailed information on features to look for in a premium progressive. This may include: Horizontal symmetry, where in a lens it reaches 100% of its reading power, recommended fitting height and reading circles, and more.
Proper PAL Measurement Techniques
To knowledgeably measure patients for their lenses, each optical professional should understand the fitting technique for progressive lenses. Section five training content will train staff members on how to properly measure for PALs, as well as how to efficiently use lens cut outs provided by their vendors and labs.
Proper Dispensing Techniques for New PAL Wearers
Section six will provide optical professionals with specific examples of dispensing techniques for educating new patients on how to wear their new PALs. Training content will include specific examples of patient explanations.
Troubleshooting Adjustments for PAL Wearers
In order to optimum vision for a patient, it is important that optical professional understand how frame adjustments can change a patients ability to see through their lenses. Section seven of the presentation will delve into specific information on troubleshooting frame adjustment techniques and provide clear explanations and benefits of each.
A separate section on the disc features:
- Interactive review quizzes at the end of each section of training.
- A comprehensive test of the training material on the CD-ROM upon completion.
- A “Resource Tools” section with helpful dispensing information for fitting PALs.
